This Valentine’s Day, get women what they really need – more representation in government.
Once again, Speaker Boehner has relied on Democrats and a few sensible Republicans to do the right thing and prevent a self-inflicted wound. The full faith and credit of the United States and keeping the global economy in good standing should not be used as a bargaining chip.
I hope Speaker Boehner will continue to do the right thing and schedule votes on bills that would extend unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed, overhaul our broken immigration system, and increase the minimum wage.

Freshman Rep. Mark Takano’s Tumblr account has hooked many followers with its “There Will Be Charts” theme at repmarktakano.tumblr.com. The California Democrat plays off the floor charts used by members on the House and Senate floors to express himself.
Takano also cross-cuts different social-media platforms by posting various content from members such as tweets and quotes and using it to engage in conversation. Although staffers contribute greatly to Takano’s Tumblr, the lawmaker approves everything that is posted and often pitches his own ideas.
He also solicits ideas; his Tumblr’s submissions page states, “Original, informative and funny submissions about Politics and/or the Inland Empire will be considered.”
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the primary federal agency that funds important biomedical and behavioral research in this country. According to the Congressional Research Service, the NIH’s budget (through grants) supports more than 300,000 non-federal scientists and technical personnel who work at more than 2,500 universities, hospitals, medical schools, and other research institutions around the country and abroad. This includes our very own UC Riverside.
The work of these researchers is critical to our nation’s economy and public health. However, in recent years we’ve slashed the NIH’s budget, which is now 22% lower than it was in 2003 when adjusted for inflation.

Opponents of Obamacare will stop at nothing. Earlier today, I sent this letter to California Attorney General Kamala Harris asking her to send a cease and desist to a fraudulent and misleading website that is being promoted by Republican lawmakers.
CoveringHealthCareCA.com purposefully provides consumers with inaccurate information and should be taken down as soon as possible.
Received this letter the other day from a constituent telling me about how Obamacare has helped her family. By moving into a compliant plan she will save more than $600 a year, and more importantly, she will have the peace of mind knowing that her coverage cannot be dropped if she gets sick.
Republicans are up in arms that fewer Americans were able to sign up for Obamacare than anticipated.
But don’t let the fake outrage fool you. They’d rather see nobody sign up.
The GOP shutdown has been disastrous for many Americans, but has been very good for one man in particular.
