Scientific American: About that consensus on global warming: 9136 agree, 1 disagrees.

“I just want to highlight this illuminating infographic by James Powell in which, based on more than 2000 peer-reviewed publications, he counts the number of authors from November, 2012 to December, 2013 who explicitly deny global warming (that is, who propose a fundamentally different reason for temperature rise than anthropogenic CO2). The number is exactly one.”

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the primary federal agency that funds important biomedical and behavioral research in this country.  According to the Congressional Research Service, the NIH’s budget (through grants) supports more than 300,000 non-federal scientists and technical personnel who work at more than 2,500 universities, hospitals, medical schools, and other research institutions around the country and abroad.  This includes our very own UC Riverside.

The work of these researchers is critical to our nation’s economy and public health.  However, in recent years we’ve slashed the NIH’s budget, which is now 22% lower than it was in 2003 when adjusted for inflation.

Are you an Obamacare Success Story?

From the White House blog

“the years 2009 to 2012 saw the slowest growth in U.S. health care expenditures since the government started collecting this information in the 1960s."

"The Affordable Care Act was designed to contribute to and sustain slow growth in health spending in this nation.  The law prioritized improving the efficiency of the health care system, creating opportunities for doctors and hospitals to deliver high quality care at lower total cost.”

“For example, the Affordable Care Act’s policies to discourage readmissions and manage care transitions have contributed to 130,000 fewer readmissions to hospitals for Medicare beneficiaries from January 2012 through August 2013.  Fewer readmissions mean lower costs for Medicare and seniors and better care as well.”

Important Read: Anatomy of an Obamacare ‘horror story’

Today’s read: Anatomy of an Obamacare ‘horror story’ by Maggie Mahar.

“The paper profiled four people who supposedly had been hurt by Obamacare. When I Googled their names, I soon discovered that three (including Johnson) were Tea Party members.

“The paper describes them as among Obamacare’s ‘losers,’ but the truth is that they didn’t want to be winners. Two hadn’t even attempted to check prices in the exchanges.”

Restoring these benefits must be a priority when Congress returns to legislative business next week.
